Mini Kingdom
Game made for the GMTK Jam 2024.
Game that combines the board game Kingdomino with Balatro. You need to place tiles each round and BUILD territories. The more you SCALE your territories the more points you will win! Each round, the map SCALES giving you a new set of 25 spaces to expand your empire. After every round, a shop will appear where you'll be able to buy new pieces for your deck! If you don't meet the required points at the end of the round, you will lose :(. Best of luck! Share your highest round on the comments.
Controls:
Mouse left button: Select and place domino pieces.
Mouse right button: Rotate domino piece.
Mouse wheel: Zoom in / zoom out
Mouse middle button / WASD / Arrow keys : Move camera.
How to Play:
- Choose a domino in the DRAW PILE (on the left side of the screen) to place it on the 5x5 grid.
- If you don’t want to use any of the dominoes in the draw pile, you can always discard them. Have in mind that you can only discard 3 times.
- You can put up to 12 pieces per round.
- Once the round is over, the counting of points begins.
- In order to win the round, you have to reach the points indicated per round.
Connection rules:
In order to place down a domino, the player must:
- Either connect it to the starting tile, the Castle.
- Or connect it to another domino matching at least 1 of its landscape.
If, due to bad planning, one or more of your dominoes could not fit, and you have no discards left, the round must be over manually with the end round button.
Points:
Once the last domino is placed or the round is finished manually, the scoring will start. The points are calculated in the following way:
- A kingdom is composed of different TERRAINS (groups of connected squares of the same type of landscape).
- Each terrain will give you as many points as the NUMBER OF SQUARES multiplied with the NUMBER OF STARS appearing on the terrain.
- The points that each square gives depends on its level. Level 1 equals 1 point, level 2 equals 2 points.
- You can have multiple terrains with the same type of landscape.
- A terrain without a star will give you no points.
- There are special effects that you will discover along the way!

it got too laggy...
Great game! I like the visuals and how you extended the base concept of Kingodmino. I'm playing Kingdomino and Queendomino a lot with my kids, so got a little bit confused with placing tiles out of the 5x5 grid, but just got used to it after few rounds. The only issue I have is that over time I feel pretty overwhelmed by the number of choices and I feel I've lost control of what's happening.
Sorry for taking so long, had a Dementia moment. From the runs I've done recently it's pretty easy to get to a point where your scoring heavily outclasses the points needed to win the round when you know what you’re doing and what you need, so I've thought of a few different ideas that could help.
1. Tower Change: The 'Tower' Building should probably be changed to maybe 1/7 or 1/8 odds to grant a star, as having a lot of them grants a huge amount of stars, leading to very easy point scoring, especially combined with the next building.
2. Sawmill Change: The 'Sawmill' Building is very op when combined with the 'Tower' and another building, and so you get an insane amount of doubling, sometimes so much that having one tile with like 9 stars could be enough to win say round 15. I reckon the change should instead be 1.5x the points, as 2x is very powerful when done right.
3. Waterwheel Change: The 'Waterwheel' Building, combos heavily with the 'Sawmill' and 'Tower' building, as getting 2 points for having the tile scored is pretty damn good, and from the way I can tell, it doesn’t score it once but multiple times if there are multiple of the same card played. A good change could be to only have it give 1 point, which would lessen it’s ability to be a major way to score points, especially if you have multiple.
4. Bank Change: The ‘Bank’ Building is arguably the best building in the game, as getting money for all the buildings you have makes it far easier to break the game and get all the cards you want. A way to do this would be to change it so it doesn’t count itself as a building at the end of the round, thus decreasing the amount of money gained. You could also have it so each next Bank would give half the money of the first one placed, thus against decreasing the amount of money gained.
5. Discards: Discards are one of the best things to have lots of, as when you have a lot of really good cards, whether it’s a scoring piece or buildings, you want to be able to find them easier. So I have a few ways to change it, you could have the player start with less discards, forcing them to have to manage more with what cards they play. You could also have it so buying more discards is more expensive, you could do it by having it start at maybe 10$, and then having it increase by either a bigger addition or multiplication.
6. Hand Size: The hand size that we have can also be a reason as to why it’s so easy to get a very easy run, since by placing down all your cards you get to grab more from your deck without using a discard. A way to make it harder could be by either increasing or decreasing the hand size, a size of four may give an extra card, but that’s an extra card that’s needed to play if you don’t want to use a discard. Now a size of two would either force them to get creative with their cards or have them use a discard, which limits their ability to find the cards they want.
So those are the ways I thought of to make the game harder and force players to get more creative with how they set things up. Now there are some things that would be great to be added that are more QOL stuff, such as being able to remove a card from your deck, leveling up a tile, giving it a modifier, increasing hand size, choosing where the next castle spawns, all of which would have to cost money to do.
Yooooo a new update hell yeah man. From what I can tell, bug fix and new scoring past round 10. I think it might be a bit harsh to have it jump up so much, but I'm not quite sure yet. I'll see if I can get further than like 15. If I can't though I feel like the scoring should start either tripling or quadrupling.
This isa really fun game with cute visuals! It took me a while to figure out that you could place pieces hanging off the edge of the 5x5 grid because you can't do that in Kingdomino.
It would be nice if there was a reason to use more than 1 territory type. I'm using two just for fun and it's just a strict downgrade over abandoning my mountains to keep only forests. Also above ~10 quintillion points the game has trouble displaying your score. Also I'm on round 34 but it is statistically impossible for me to lose at this point; I get 19 discards per round and need only a single tile with a mountain and/or forest on it to win, and I can have the new territory spawn not adjacent to my existing stuff ~10 times in a row before I would run out of space to play, and there's ~75% chance it spawns adjacent to existing stuff each round, and the score needed isn't really going up very fast afaict and the x2 multiplier buildings I'm placing every round are the only reason I'm struggling for space at this point. Is there an end? It doesn't let me scroll past a certain point so maybe there is? I don't know. I'm a bit concerned I'm going to overflow the stack soon and lose with a negative score.
It's a jam game, so it has balancing issues. The only end is if you don't meet the target or the ulong max size 😅. Thanks for playing either way, hope you liked it!

This game is big numbers, and definitely a lot of fun for the first few playthroughs! I found that the "end round" button was actually a key part of the strategy toward getting huge numbers, because it means you can leave more tiles open for the pieces you want to place as the rounds continue. This makes the game incredibly easy once you start intentionally ending the round with lots of tiles left over and have an engine built around 1 or 2 territory types. I'm currently on round 42 and am able to win the rounds by placing only one piece per round because I've buffed up my mountains enough that this is possible. I don't foresee any end to the game at this point, and my point total is currently in the trillions for each round, as well.
A couple ideas that might help the game feel more challenging:
1. Adding an "antagonist" that maybe fills unused tiles occasionally. Or some sort of negative events that slowly disable the tiles you currently have on the board?
2. Scaling the price of tile rerolls in the shop with each reroll. Maybe even in a way that extends between rounds - meaning if you rerolled in a previous round, the price of a reroll in the next would be scaled higher.
3. Having some of the "buyable" tile pairs have at least one "non-territory" square (i.e., one that doesn't do anything for your points in any situation), especially if the other tile in the pair is powerful.
4. Maybe this is a reach, but having some "special effects" on tiles have a downside - i.e., instead of "Territory Type get +2 permanent points", something more like "Territory Type gets +2 permanent points, and Other Territory Type gets -1 permanent points", or similar.

This was very fun! Would make a great mobile game IMO. Crazy how quickly it started escalating, definitely would be good to have some way of rerolling what section you're gonna be expanding into though, made it 10 rounds and then on the 11th it seemed like it shot up to a much higher point goal and I was filling out a section only connected on one edge xD
Pretty fun so far, the game gets very easy outside of the early game. You could possibly make the round score requirement slightly accelerate. A way to thin the deck would also be nice
Bug time! Now I'm not sure if this is a bug due to me having lost my internet foe a bit but sometimes the shop glitches out and only shows 2 tiles to pick from, and re rolling it uses a big chunk of money even though it says it's 2 dollars. Not sure if these are related or not, and I am unsure if they were caused via my internet. Also the game did crash once, if it crashes again I'll copy the crash message.
I've got a few things I'd like to ask if it's alright.
1, will you be adding in any new features? Such as a way to thin your deck.
2, I have some suggestions for new features that could be added, one being packs like Balatro as clearly this game takes some inspiration from Balatro. The packs could be 2 different packs, the first being a pack that focuses on terrain pieces, higher chance of double terrain (That being the same terrain piece on a tile), a bit higher chance for the special effects to be added. The second one would be a building pack which would cost more but it will always have at least 1 double building piece. There could also be different size packs that cost more or less depending on how many tiles are offered and how many you can pick.
3, I love this game a lot, it's really fun and I enjoy it so damn much. Keep up the good work and just know that you will always have me as a fan of this game.

The bug that you mentioned I will try to fix it at the end of next week, the issue is that the button to buy the right tile gets at the top of the reroll button, and you essentially buy the tile. From what I've seen if you always reroll from the right part of the button it doesn't happen.
Found another bug, I think the hotfix update did something and now the Water Mills won't ever have Lavender as a possibility. Not sure how, but it somehow happened.
Edit: It also seems to not have Fields as a possibility either.

Very nice game! Entertained me for an hour before I accidentally left the page. But not before reaching ~30M points - and my two giant forests weren't even connected yet! :D
Some small improvements that I think could be nice:

The round score scales too little right now, we will update it with a better scale or/and a limit.
In case you're wondering, I scaled to absolute insanity by taking every single "add 2 to prairie each time it scores" and "add stars to terrain" option I could to build the GIGAPRAIRIE. I also got lucky and collected some "if the size of this terrain is greater than X..." added on.
One tip to make these strategies less busted. Make reroll cost scale rapidly per round. I got to a point where I was racking up crazy amounts of money to the point that I could reroll and buy everything I wanted a dozen times, increasing my power level and chance of getting what I needed super quickly. I basically bought every prairie and prairie buff to the point I could guarantee they'd appear first draw every round.
Oh also, I definitely would recommend scaling more exponentially. You could take a page out of balatro's book and have a set standard number of rounds to win, or you could just scale it super steep and add a leaderboard to see if someone finds the limit to what's possible.
Thanks for your feedback! It definitely needs way more scaling! We have some ideas to balance the game and we definitely have balatro as a reference. We noticed that buildings in general are too overpowered and we will do something about it.
Remember, balance doesn't necessarily mean fun. It's insanely satisfying to watch the score grow into the millions. That's what makes balatro fun, and it's what makes this game fun. (I just spent an entire 3 hour class playing it again up into the tens of millions.)
Got a few more things, 1, I lost because somehow I scored negative points, I believe from the tile addon thingy where it's (X points of type placed) or something like that. 2, I personally think that adding a button to choose where the next area you can build goes would be good, make it cost like 500 dollars. 3, A way to thin your deck, without it, you need a lot of discards to try and find the tile you want.
This game absolutely needs to have the function to move the camera with the arrow keys, otherwise it's near impossible to play without a mouse.

are you considering making a native build for win/linux/mac after the jam? cause i am genuinely wanting to play this regularly
Yes, we will upload a windows build as well as soon as the voting period ends. We didn't had time to do it during the jam, because I had to switch platforms to do it and we prioritized webGL, so it's easier for people to play.

The water mill crashes the build when a tile that has earned permanent points spawns again 😢 When the voting period ends I will update the game with a fix.
hey there! really cool and addicting game, i just have a problem i think? whenever the tiles expand on a new round for me, it shows them cutting off outside of the screen view. i've tried scrolling or dragging around to see if i could move my view downwards, but it hasn't worked for me. so i'm not sure if i'm experiencing some random problem, or i'm just dumb lol (hopefully picture attached shows it alright)
You should be able to drag the camera with the middle mouse (only on fullscreen view because of being played on a browser)

Oh sorry to hear that, just to be clear is pressing the middle button, not scrolling. When the voting part is over we will make an update fixing some issues and add a windows version as well so it's easier to play, hopefull that will fix it.

Absolutely amazing game! Got hooked for 3 hours almost, difficulty scaling could use some work and literally my only complaint is QOL things like zooming in and out! Got a high score of 20000 before throwing in the towel round 12. Love it!
Edit: Kept playing and it crashed around 300000 score, going to start my next run now <3
